Using WhatsApp

How linking works, how WaFine paces sends, and how to keep your number safe.

WaFine runs on an unofficial WhatsApp client. WhatsApp can restrict or ban numbers that behave like automated or bulk senders. This page explains how to reduce that risk.

How linking works

WaFine connects to WhatsApp the same way WhatsApp Web does: as a linked device on your account. Your phone stays the primary device.

  • You can see and remove the WaFine device at any time under Linked devices on your phone.
  • Removing it, or deleting your session in the web app, stops the API and revokes your keys.
  • Messages you send from your phone or WhatsApp Web keep working as usual.
  • Only the number you signed up with can be linked to your account.

Choose the right number

Use a dedicated number, not the personal number you cannot afford to lose.

  • Prefer a number that has been in normal use for a while: real conversations, saved contacts, a profile name and photo. A brand-new number that starts sending at once looks like spam.
  • Warm a new number up gradually. Chat normally for a few days before you automate anything.
  • Keep the phone with that SIM working, so you can recover the account if needed.

Pacing and send limits

WaFine limits how fast your session can send through the API, MCP and auto-replies.

  • API send budget. Each session has a daily and a per-minute cap on sends (by default 300 per day and 10 per minute). Over the cap, the REST API answers 429 with Retry-After, and MCP tools return an error your assistant can report.
  • What counts. Text, media, replies and forwards sent through WaFine count; a bulk send counts once per recipient. Reads, reactions and messages you send from your own phone do not.
  • Refused sends are refunded. A send that WhatsApp rejects does not use your budget.
  • Auto-replies are slower still. They wait a few seconds, imitate reading and typing, and are dropped rather than queued when limits are hit.

The budget limits volume. It does not judge who you write to, so the rules below are yours to follow.

Good practice

  1. No cold bulk sends. Do not message people who have never contacted you or do not expect to hear from you.
  2. Write to people who opted in. Customers, colleagues and contacts who asked for updates.
  3. Keep volumes low and human-like. Spread messages out; avoid identical text to many chats.
  4. Make replies easy. People who reply rarely report you as spam.
  5. Stop when you see warnings. If WhatsApp shows a restriction, pause all automation.
  6. Review what your assistant sends. If Claude can send, keep approval on for send tools.

If something goes wrong

  • Session disconnected: open the WhatsApp page and scan a new QR code.
  • 429 responses: wait for the Retry-After delay; do not retry in a tight loop.
  • Number restricted by WhatsApp: stop sending and follow WhatsApp's in-app instructions before you relink the number.

WaFine cannot lift a restriction placed by WhatsApp. The risk of running an unofficial client stays with the number owner.
