MCP and Claude
Connect Claude, or any MCP client, to your WhatsApp number through WaFine.
WaFine exposes your session as an MCP server, so an assistant such as Claude can read your chats and send messages for you. The endpoint is:
https://api.example.com/mcpIt uses the Streamable HTTP transport. Your WhatsApp session must exist and be connected first.
Add the Claude connector
This works in Claude on the web, desktop and mobile apps. Claude signs in with OAuth, so you do not paste an API key.
- In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector.
- Enter the URL
https://api.example.com/mcp. Leave the OAuth fields empty. - Choose Connect. A WaFine page opens: sign in, review the request, choose Allow.
- Back in Claude, enable the connector in a conversation and ask, for example, "Summarise my unread WhatsApp chats."
To disconnect, remove the app under Connected apps on the WhatsApp page in WaFine, or remove the connector in Claude. Deleting your session also disconnects every app.
Use an API key instead
Clients that cannot sign in with OAuth, such as Claude Code or a custom agent, can send an
API key in the X-API-Key header.
Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http whatsapp https://api.example.com/mcp \
--header "X-API-Key: <your-key>"A generic MCP client configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"whatsapp": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://api.example.com/mcp",
"headers": { "X-API-Key": "<your-key>" }
}
}
}Read-only vs send
The WaFine MCP server offers two kinds of tools:
- Read tools: list chats, read messages, look up contacts. They never count against your send budget.
- Send tools: send, reply to and forward messages. They count against your session's send budget, like REST sends.
WaFine does not offer a read-only key. To keep an assistant read-only, turn off the send tools in your client's tool permissions; in Claude, set them in the connector's settings. If you allow sending, keep approval on so you confirm each message before it goes out.
When the send budget is used up, send tools return an error that Claude can show you, rather than failing silently.
Good practice
- Ask the assistant to draft, then approve the send yourself.
- Do not ask it to message people who do not expect to hear from you.
- Read Using WhatsApp for the ban-risk guidance that applies to every send, whoever makes it.
